Has it really been only six years since Peter Jackson felt he had to make a point of thanking the Academy for seeing “past the trolls and the wizards and the hobbits” when he picked up his trophy as Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King won its Best Picture Oscar?
How times have changed! Today Hollywood saw past blue aliens—and the South African ones, too—and no one was even surprised about it.

The Oscar nominations are out and quite a few scifi movies appeared in the major categories including best picture. Avatar landed in the top spot as expected, but I was surprised to see District 9 in the list as well. James Cameron is up for Best Director for Avatar as well and District 9 gets on the list for best adapted screenplay.
Star Trek comes into the mix with nominations in Special Effects, Make-up and Sound categories. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, gets a sound nod as well.
